Helpful hints for the visitor to Panama

While not trying to preach, here are a few tips that will make your trip go more smoothly:

1. Try to learn as much Spanish as you possibly can. English is widely spoken in Panama City, but virtually nonexistant in the interior. Even if you fumble badly in Spanish, the effort is appreciated.

2. Dress in the cities is more formal than in the U.S. Beach attire, shorts, baggies, bikinis, etc, are acceptable on the beach, but are frowned upon in the cities.

3. Always carry your passport with you. Boat tours are occasionally checked out by the Coast Guard. Passengers without documentation can be detained, even jailed, until they can produce documentation. This can also happen in the cities, especially at night.

4. Refrain from carrying large denomination currency. In Santa Catalina it is very difficult to change bills of $50 or $100. Even in Panama City, a large number of businesses such as stores and restaurants refuse to accept $50 and $100 bills. While there is no ATM in Santa Catalina, Sona, just an hour away has one, and $500 in $20 bills can be readily obtained.

5. Exercize judgement when travelling. While the majority of Panama is very safe, ostentatious displays of expensive watches, jewelry, etc... can lead to a great deal of temptation.

6. When surfing the main break at Santa Catalina, surf with respect, and acknowledge your ability. If you are not accustomed to surfing powerful, overhead reef surf, try the estero beach. There is a definite local surf scene, as well as an established pecking order in the lineup. Lack of respect to them can lead to very frustrating sessions, as the locals can easily shut one down. Show a smile, be respectful, and the locals will return the favor.
